SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Many people have been affected by the triple homicide in southwest Sioux Falls. Because of this, a local group is hosting a vigil at the scene of the murders.

As family and friends mourn the loss of Daniel Kemnitz, Michael Thompson, and Kellie Reaves, many neighbors are stunned and saddened by the loss of life in their own backyard.

“They’re just shocked that anything like this could happen in their neighborhood. And so they somewhat don’t feel safe and they somewhat have a feeling of darkness in their neighborhood,” Mary Ihli said.

This is why Pax Christi South Dakota is going to host a vigil near the home where the murders happened.

“I think this particular community I’ve talked to people and they all know everyone knows someone that’s in this community, it seems like, because it just kind of brings everyone together,” Renae Green said.

At this coming Monday night’s vigil, they will have a prayer session. They’ll also scatter rose petals and holy water.

“These flowers are bringing the fragrance of peace to that place. The other ritual is is we are, just like at baptism, we sprinkle the landscape with holy water. And that is a symbol of restoring, renewing or refreshing that place,” Sister Pegge Boehm said.

The vigil will bring people together and unite a neighborhood amidst a horrible tragedy.

“What we really want to do is to change that darkness into light,” Ihli said.
