We are starting the day with strong winds and snow in the highest elevations of the Black Hills. This was the scene from Terry Peak as of 7am this morning.

Winter storm warnings remain in effect for those affected locations.

A high wind warning is also in effect for much of western SD, with wind gusts over 60mph at times.

The storms that rolled through eastern KELOLAND last evening packed a punch. Thankfully, damage reports are very limited this morning.

We did pick up some heavy rain. Another 1-2″ fell in NW IA.

The risk of severe weather may return to southeastern KELOLAND tomorrow. The center of the upper-level low pressure area will be moving into this region during the peak heating of the afternoon, sparking scattered thunderstorm development. Due to the nature of the low pressure and the spin in the atmosphere, we can’t rule out a brief tornado late in the day. Continue to watch for updates later today.

The animation below shows the increase in thunderstorm coverage is the afternoon across eastern and southeastern KELOLAND. The storms could also produce some locally heavy downpours, especially into NW IA again.

Here are the details of the forecast.

The extended forecast is looking drier and warmer into the weekend and early next week.
