STURGIS, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Department of Public Safety (DPS) has released it’s latest report of stats, which show an influx in drug and DUI arrests in 2024 compared to 2023.
The DPS releases a Sturgis Rally Tally – a 24-hour (6 a.m. to 6 a.m.) recap for crashes, DUI arrests, drug arrests, citations and warnings for both Sturgis and the Rapid City district.
Note: Rally Tally numbers from DPS do not include data from the Rally’s official opening day Friday, Aug. 2.
Through the time period of 6:00 a.m. Thursday to 6:00 a.m. Friday, the rally saw a total of 18 DUI arrests, 71 misdemeanor drug arrests and 16 felony drug arrests.
Between the Sturgis and Rapid City districts, 186 citations were issued.
DUI arrests are up in 2024 with 142 compared to 109 in 2023. Drug arrests are also up in 2024 with 259 compared to 212 in 2023.
Injury crashes are down from 59 in 2023 to 33 in 2024.
Injury Crashes
On Friday at 11:54 a.m., a Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound with a group of others on US Hwy 385. A Honda GL 1000 motorcycle was traveling southbound behind the group of motorcycles. The driver of the Honda failed to see the motorcycle slowing down and began passing on the left. The Honda motorcycle struck the Harley Davidson. The Honda overturned and the driver separated from the motorcycle.
The driver of the Honda was wearing a helmet and received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Harley Davidson was wearing a helmet, was uninjured and able to drive his motorcycle from the scene.
On Friday at 6:35 p.m., a Harley Davidson Street Glide motorcycle was traveling southbound on US HWY 385. A Harley Davidson FLHRC was traveling northbound on US HWY 385.
The FLHRC crossed the centerline in front of the Street Glide and sideswiped the southbound Street Glide as they traveled past.
The driver of the Street Glide was able to maintain control of his motorcycle and stop.
A passenger on the FLHRC motorcycle received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the FLHRC motorcycle fled the scene but was located uninjured a short time later and charges are pending against the driver of the FLHRC.
All persons involved were not wearing helmets.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating these crashes
