SOUTH DAKOTA (KELO) — We’ve had light showers in eastern KELOLAND today. This will continue through the afternoon before taking a pause until later tonight. That will not be the case in western South Dakota, where stronger heating bumped by an approaching cold front.

Late this afternoon and into this evening we’ll be on the lookout for severe weather in western South Dakota. Storms that form will move toward Pierre and central SD by late evening. The Storm Prediction Center is likely to issue a watch because there is an enhanced risk of large hail, damaging wind, and even tornadoes in western into central South Dakota.

Those storms will continue to move to the east overnight through tomorrow morning, pushed along by the accompanying cold front. Storms should not be as strong in Sioux Falls and eastern KELOLAND, though it is not impossible there could be some pockets of heavy rainfall. The latest forecast models suggest we could have some 1/2″ to 1″ amounts.

On Friday, rain should mostly end during the morning, followed by slowly decreasing cloud cover later in the afternoon. Temperatures should top out in the upper 70s to low 80s.

The weekend looks mostly dry and cool. On Saturday we’ll have partly to mostly sunny skies with a northerly breeze. Temperatures should top out in the low 70s, which is ten degrees cooler than normal.

Sunday will be partly cloudy, with temperatures remaining in the low to mid-70s in eastern KELOLAND. The west should get a surge of warmer air, which could result in some thunderstorms.

Monday, the first day of July, is our next shot of potentially significant rainfall. Widespread thunderstorms and breezy winds, with highs in the upper 70s to the 80s. We’re in for a period of mostly dry days for the middle of next week, with near-normal temperatures in the mid-80s. Currently, it looks like Thursday, the 4th of July, will be dry for most of us, though there is a bit of a thunderstorm risk in western South Dakota.
