SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Governor Kristi Noem says South Dakota rivers impacted by flooding will be cresting Monday or Tuesday. That includes the Big Sioux River which is expected to crest Tuesday morning at a record 38.4 feet in Sioux City, IA. The Big Sioux in Sioux Falls is expected to crest at 16.5 to 17 feet.

During a telephone news conference with reporters Saturday morning, Noem says public dams have held, but floodwater has breached some private levees.

Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken is urging city residents to conserve water because the city’s wastewater collection and treatment systems are working above capacity.

He says the city is directing overflow to detention holding ponds.

TenHaken says first-responders have rescued six people from flooding since Friday, including a water rescue near Falls Park.

TenHaken says people should avoid visiting Falls Park altogether because it is not a safe place.
