SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota is filled with weddings left and right this time of the year. While 2024 couples likely have everything planned at this point, the 2025 and ’26 couples should start planning very soon.

Pulling together a wedding can take a lot of work.

One of the first things to do is find a venue.

“How early we had to get started to reserve a venue? About a year ahead of time,” father of bride, Jason Pruis said.

When it comes to finding a venue, there are plenty of options – from sleek warehouse-style settings, to something more rustic.

“My husband and I have four children. All of them are married,” Riverview Barn owner, Pam Hedman said.

At Riverview Barn, the owners know a thing or two about weddings because of personal experience.

“We had the opportunity to be a large part of their planning process for their wedding. We really enjoyed it. It brought our family closer together and we decided we wanted to be a part of other people’s weddings,” Hedman said.

Riverview Barn is busy with weddings for about 6 months of the year.

“Our most popular months are May through October. That’s what we call our peak wedding season, probably because we’re here in South Dakota and the weather is nicer,” Hedman said.

For couples planning a wedding during this peak season, planning ahead is important.

“Our couples usually book about a year to 15 months ahead of time. But we do have a number of people who do shorter engagements. And this week I booked one for November of 2024,” Hedman said.

“Yeah, venues do fill up quickly, so yeah. We didn’t really realize, but our daughter did, so that was good,” mother of bride, Rachelle Pruis said.

Once you’ve locked down a venue, you can turn your focus to the finer details like the flowers and the centerpieces, and don’t forget the dress.

While right now is the busiest time for brides, things have slowed down at Bridal Gallery.

“Our busiest time is always going to be actually in the winter, which is kind of surprising to people because everybody gets married in the summer. So a lot of people are shopping in the winter for their dresses,” Bridal Gallery social media director Aleah Burggraff said.

While it is slower during the summer, it is still important to order your dress months ahead of time.

“So you get measured and then you order in the dress and you usually need like 6 to 8 months to get that dress in and then you have alterations. So it’s a long process, so you definitely want to be planning ahead,” Burggraff said.

And while a major focus on the bride, it’s important to also order other clothing ahead of time.

“Bridesmaids dresses, those also need like six months. Tuxes need around two months,” Burggraff said.

Planning ahead to bring together all aspects of a wedding, and make it a special day for everyone.

“Just enjoy it all because it really goes by very quickly. Don’t worry about the little details. It’ll all fall into place,” Pruis said.
