SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A 7-year-old Sioux Falls girl is starting her summer vacation in the hospital after suffering severe burns from a campfire.

On May 26, Paxton Rae and her family were starting a campfire with the help of a little gasoline. However, it quickly took a turn after the wind blew some of the gas onto Paxton.

“She immediately stopped, dropped and rolled right on the grass and her dad tackled her. And then we rushed to the ER and they ended up flying her here to the burn center in St. Paul,” Logan Gran, Paxton’s mother said.Paxton suffered deep second and third-degree burns and has been in a hospital bed ever since.

“It happens very quickly. The damage that fire can do, the whole ordeal was less than 10 seconds. You know, it’s just it happens quickly,” Logan Gran said.It wasn’t until five days ago she started to walk again.

“After the skin grafts, hopefully, we’ll get off bed rest. And then once she starts walking and, you know, getting back to normalcy, then we should be able to send her home,” Logan Gran said.Doctors say about 10% of her body was burned in the fire, mostly on her legs.

“It’s kind of like one of those things that you watch on TV when you see people playing with fire and it always backfires on them. It can happen to anybody,” Dillon Gran, Paxton’s father said.

Her parents say throughout this journey, Paxton has stayed strong.“She is receiving a lot of love, a lot of letters, a lot of fun little presents. Her school got together and a lot of her friends sent letters. And she’s been receiving so much fan mail. And I think that’s really, really helping her to kind of keep her spirits up,” Dillon Gran said.

Doctors say Paxton will be able to go home in about a month after her skin grafts are complete. Click here for more information on the GoFundMe.
