RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) –Rapid City Police are looking for the person who shot and killed a teenager.

The investigation began around 10 o’clock last night, when police responded to a call at Memorial Park.

This is where authorities found 18-year-old Wanbli Janis.

Police say he was one of several young people who were at Memorial Park last night.

“The information that we received just indicated that there was multiple individuals throughout earlier in the evening that had some sort of negative interaction, which ultimately resulted in this confrontation at the park,” Lieutenant Chris Holbrook said.

Summer Nights was happening downtown, but police confirm that wasn’t where those interactions began.

“We’re a pretty safe event. We hire personal security, we have six security people at our gates and walking around. We also have four police officers present in our border downtown and then of course you know, talking to the police that they also have four officers that roam the streets,” Summer Nights President Judd Nielsen said.

Today Janis’ sister and other family members gathered at Memorial park.

They’re hoping police find answers and that Janis finds peace.

“Pray for his journey home back to the happy hunting grounds with our ancestors. So we burnt sage and prayed with the eagle feather and asked friends and family to come down to help. We don’t want him roaming the earth and he’ll go home at peace and we’ll have peace,” victim’s Sister Paulette Means said.

“Obviously it’s ongoing as far as the investigation is concerned. We don’t have specific information that relates it to gang activity or any other type of criminal activity other than it’s an incident between multiple individuals,” LT. Holbrook said.

Police don’t believe the shooting was random and say the public is not in danger.

Rapid City Police ask anyone with information about last night’s shooting to give them a call.
