SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO)–Now that the primary is over, the focus truly turns to election day in November. But like every presidential election year, the markets tend to become very reactionary the closer it gets to the election.

“Once we get into the summer months, that’s really when it gets ramped up,” First National Bank Chief Wealth Management Officer Adam Cox said.

Investors all over the nation are bracing for the impact of a presidential election year.

“People can get triggered emotionally when they feel like their candidate isn’t going to win or the county or their state or municipality isn’t going in a direction that they like,” Cox said.

Those emotions often lead to some strong reactions in the market.

“They’re made up of people and people are unpredictable and they’re going to be motivated by different things that you may be motivated by,” Cox said. “And so because of that, it’s just really impossible to tell what markets are going to do.”

Cox says the only thing investors can count on is the market being ‘wildly erratic’ during a presidential election year, but he says it shouldn’t change your strategy.

“We all need to have long-term time horizons. And what we see over time with markets is they continue to go up. And the reason is, when we’re buying into the stock market, we’re not buying a president, we’re not buying a political party,” Cox said. “We’re buying a basket of companies. And companies, no matter the environment, are going to try to find ways to make money. And so that’s what we’re buying into. And so no matter the market, no matter who the president is, companies are going to find a way to make money. And ultimately, that’s why you’re invested.”

Cox also says he looks to history as a way to calm emotions, saying America and its markets have survived world wars, The Great Depression and countless recessions and changes but continues to grow all the same.
