MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO) — A Mitchell Church is figuring out its next steps after someone vandalized the building with graffiti.

Someone took spray paint to the Congregational United Church of Christ in Mitchell this week. The church is known for its acceptance of members of the LGBTQ+ community. However, this is not the first time the church has been vandalized.

“We’ve had chalk obscenities written and symbols drawn on our sidewalks, you know, never to the extent of, you know, spray paint until now,” Mitchell Congregational UCC Church Pastor Matt Richards said.

“Freedom of religion is a constitutional right, and to have that damaged and threatened cuts really deep,” Attended UCC her whole life Wendy Figland said.

Friday night, someone also took down the church’s ‘God’s doors are open to all’ display following the spray paint vandalism on Thursday.

“So it seems pretty hypocritical for someone who claims to be a Christian to come and vandalize a building and break the law irregardless as to whether it’s a church or not,” Richards said.

But once the community saw what someone did to the church, they decided to color over the hate, with love.

“To have such a loving response of people who want to do away with the hatred that was on display and come and help the church, help the members of the church feel like there’s still love and value in the community,” Richards said.

“It was mostly community people, there were not a lot of our church members here actually doing it. It was people that came to cover up that hate and it just made me smile all the way through my soul to see that happening. It was indescribable that to see that hate being erased,” Figland said.

The Congregational United Church of Christ is holding a Pride event later this month.
