VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO) — 64-year-old Jay Ostrem faced forward as he walked toward a waiting elevator at the Clay County Courthouse on Wednesday. Beyond acknowledging he understands the three first-degree murder charges he faces, the former mayor of Centerville, S.D. said little at his hearing.

No defense counsel accompanied Ostrem, who had bandages on his left hand and right arm. Shortly after the judge set a $1 million cash-only bond, the court was in recess. A circuit court arraignment is set for June 20.

Circuit court administrator Kim Allison told KELOLAND News following the hearing that family of alleged victims had no comment. Even though the incident took place in Turner County, Allison says future hearings in the case are “likely” to be held in McCook County. The Turner County Courthouse is currently unable to hold a hearing, and the judge at Wednesday’s hearing was holding court in nearby Yankton.

“There are situations where the judges need to move hearings due to convenience or other scheduling,” Allison said.

Ostrem served as a deputy with the Turner County Sheriff’s Office from 2007 to 2014.
