SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Some local athletes started Memorial Day with an intense workout.

It was part of “The Murph Challenge,” in honor of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL who was killed in the war in Afghanistan nearly 20 years ago.

There’s no sleeping-in on a holiday morning for this group. How could you hit the snooze button with a rousing pep talk.

“You guys showed up today! I love it! This is what it’s all about,” Fit Body Boot Camp owner C.J. Wehrkamp said.

The Murph Challenge at Fit Body Boot Camp included a 1-mile run, and that’s just for starters. Participants also do 100 pull-ups; 200 push-ups and 300 squats… capped-off by another mile run.

“It is a challenge,” Wehrkamp said.

Some of the athletes have overcome physical setbacks just to take part in the challenge.

“I’ve had a couple of knee surgeries, so I’ve done a few modified versions of this so I’m actually hoping to be able to run this time versus walk. And, I’ve lost over 100 pounds at Fit Body, so this will be my first time doing it with all that extra weight on,” Liz Fladmark of Sioux Falls said.

This is Hailee Naglestad’s first time taking part in the challenge.

“It is a little intimidating. But I mean, it’s Memorial Day. Got to do it for our family and for all the people that are fighting for our country. Yeah, it’ll be fun,” Naglestad said.

Even though a lot of hardcore athletes are taking part in this challenge, it’s really open to anyone with any athletic ability. There. Did my one pull-up for the day. High five!

“Your mindset, your mentality kind of has you feeling like you want to give up. You want to stop, but the best thing is when you break through that mental block, it proves to yourself that you can do more than you ever thought possible when you’re surrounded by people that believe in you,” Wehrkamp said.

Strength in numbers. Athletes pushing themselves to the limit, ever mindful of military members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice; flexing their muscle memory on this Memorial Day.

This is the sixth year that Fit Body Boot Camp has hosted The Murph Challenge. Money raised from the event goes toward a scholarship in Lt. Murphy’s memory.
