SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Memorial Day can be a somber holiday, especially for those who have lost loved ones overseas.

Today, one family in southwest Sioux Falls covered their lawn with American flags.

“This morning, I was out here with the measuring tape and everything to ensure that it was lined up perfectly and that it wasn’t sloppy,” Khrystyne Hollingsworth said.

Working out instead of grilling out on Memorial Day

At her home in Sioux Falls, Hollingsworth has 72 flags evenly spaced, each one representing a fallen member of our U.S. military, and this one is special to her because it represents her fallen fiance.

“Jonathan was a senior airman in the Air Force. He’s from Lafayette, California, and he died in Bagram, Afghanistan on April 29, 2008, by a roadside bomb,” Hollingsworth said.

The memorial serves as a perfect tribute for Hollingsworth’s fiance and the 71 other people that didn’t make it back home.

“It honors him just so that he’s not forgotten. Each of these flags, as the wind blows, it’s not the wind that’s blowing it, it’s the last breath of our soldiers,” Hollingsworth said.

This Memorial Day is also a great reminder for Hollingsworth’s family to always remember those who sacrificed it all to protect our country.

“It means that we’re supporting the people that have helped give us our freedom and just make sure that they’re not forgotten,” Hollingsworth’s daughter, Nevaeh Cressy, said.

“I just think that we need to not forget our fallen heroes because if it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have our freedoms,” Hollingsworth said.

Hollingsworth included flags for other family members and friends, as well as names that were submitted to her.
