SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — This Memorial Day weekend, people will be visiting the graves of veterans and loved ones.

The weed wackers are buzzing at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Sioux Falls.

That’s one of several jobs the staff is doing to prepare for the busy weekend.

“Getting headstones ready if there’s anything that needs to be cleaned up as well as just having the grounds looking great,” Grounds foreman Tylor Albrecht said.

Getting the cemetery in tip-top condition started long before Friday.

“Actually, the whole month of May is pretty much like herding cats getting ready for Memorial Day,” Executive director Matt Gage said.

Gage says last Memorial Day about 500 cars were counted in the cemetery from Friday afternoon through Monday.

“The staff takes a lot of pride in trying to make this place look great for Memorial Day, and it sets the tone for the summer for us,” Gage said.

And families will see all that work this weekend as they visit loved ones’ graves.

“Want to give them the most beautiful scene they have and just have that peaceful process of mourning of their family or paying their respects to their family,” Albrecht said.

On Saturday, groups will place hundreds of flags at veterans’ graves.
