VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO) — It started as a quiet night in one neighborhood, just blocks from Vermillion High School, but that didn’t last.

Residents in the neighborhood say they were awoken by the sound of sirens and flashing lights. One man said he remembers seeing cops running to and from their cars.

According to the Vermillion Police Department, when officers arrived, they found a man who died from a gunshot wound.

“We’re not really able to release any other information about the call at this time. We can just tell the public there’s no threat to the public,” Vermillion Police Chief Crystal Brady said.

Police wouldn’t confirm the exact location where the incident happened.

“We certainly don’t want to keep things from people, but I don’t want put information out there that’s not accurate. And then we have to correct later,” Chief Brady said.

The Vermillion Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the DCI are all involved in the investigation.

The police chief said authorities know who was involved and says everyone is cooperating.

Neighbors we talked with are hoping for answers soon. At this point there are no arrests and no names are being released.

This is a developing story.
