SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Predicting the weather in KELOLAND is always a challenge to some degree, so when the opportunity to be one of the first stations in the country to test some new AI technology arrived, we jumped at the opportunity.

Using weather models to help tell the weather forecast has changed a lot over the years. I remember when I started at KELOLAND 24 years ago, we showed a lot of hand-drawn maps.

Fast forward to today, we are using modeling to find relationships between patterns and pinpoint areas of interest with each passing wave of weather.

Now, we are adding in the world of AI or “artificial intelligence” features of machine learning to the mix. Does it work well? Is it worth exploring? The quick answer is yes.

We are finding the skill scores of the new AI version of the European model are doing well. In fact, it has the best accuracy of any tool in our toolbox for long-range forecasts. So we volunteered to test the modeling here at KELOLAND Media Group, one of the first stations in the nation to bring these tools to our audience during our daily broadcasts. It won’t look much different than our other Futurecast products. The focus is accuracy. Temperatures, jet stream patterns, and some precipitation forecasts are included so far and all the testing starts right away.

It’s a work in progress, but it certainly shows some promising signs of future development.
