SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — We saw this many times last year, hazy sunshine due to smoke from wildfires in Canada. Unfortunately, it’s already back as things haven’t improved when it comes to moisture to our north.

This is a look at the drought monitor in Canada. While ours has been improving in KELOLAND, things haven’t changed much for our friends to the north as severe to exceptional drought continues for western Canada.

And as fires continue to burn in the dry conditions, we’ll watch for smoke.

Expect smoky skies to continue for the next couple of days as depicted here on this forecast model.

While the surface winds will change from time to time, it’s the upper-level winds that are the steering winds for the smoke.

You can see those upper-level winds here. Notice how they come straight out of Canada, keeping the smoke in KELOLAND.

And as rain chances continue for us in KELOLAND this week, rain will continue to be harder to come by in Canada. Keeping the threat of fires going.
