SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Avera’s Annual Race against cancer attracted thousands of people this morning who have been affected by cancer in one way or another.

People gathered bright and early for the race this morning, with over 6 thousand people registering for the event. For one family, it was their first year at the race.

“So me and my dad like to run 5Ks and 10Ks, but we thought that this one would be a really cool race to run because it has like more meaning behind it and it’s for a really good cause,” Molly Hanse said.

For the Hanse family, it was a bittersweet morning, with their grandma Carol beating cancer, and their grandpa Barney passing away from the disease.

“I want to say a couple of years ago that she started getting to where she wasn’t worried. Well, about a year ago when she went to one of her last appointments,” Mark Hanse said.

“So my grandpa battled lung cancer about ten years ago, and he lost one lung because of it. But he was cancer free and lived a great life until about a year and a half ago,” Molly said.

As they celebrate the life of one person, and remember the life of another.

“It’s mixed emotions. It’s awesome that everybody here has been affected in some way, shape or form by this disease and that everyone can be together and just bring awareness to this and also to stay active and just do great things and raise money for it,” Molly said.

“I’m just happy to be able to come here and support, you know, the people that have had it or lost somebody,” Mark said.

As the community runs together, to support each other through the highs and lows of the battles with cancer.

There were 10K and 5K runs at the race, as well as a mile and a half and 3 mile walks.
