SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO)–Homebuilders in Sioux Falls are seeing a rebound in demand for new single-family homes.

Saturday marks the start of the Spring Parade of Homes, one of the biggest events for every area of homebuilding.

“Everybody’s so excited that the sun is out, you know, the grass is getting green,” Ruth Ann Scott with The Living Door interior design said.

Those are all great signs of spring, but so are these black and orange signs announcing the arrival of the Spring Parade of Homes.

“The Parade of Homes is actually probably the best marketing tool that we have as far as builders go. Because not only can we show off what we build, we get to talk to people, have them come through, touch and feel things that you just don’t get when you’re drawing a plan or you’re, you know, looking on pictures online, you just can’t get that same feel,” Erik Christensen with Trademark Homes Incorporated said.

It’s a great way for builders to showcase their work, especially as demand for new homes increases. Compared to last year, this spring has brought double the amount of permits for new single family homes.

The legal alternative to street racing

“Single family stuff has actually a little bit better this year than last year. The inverse of that is that the multifamily was gone down considerably, but still not near what we were at two years ago,” Christensen said.

As with demand for builders, it also means more work for the many other businesses impacted by new construction.

“From plumbers to electricians to Builders Millwork to Scott’s Lumber. I mean, and then you go to lighting and you go to, you know, furniture and things like that countertops. So a lot of people benefit from the parade of homes,” Scott said.

That includes interior designer Ruth Ann Scott with the Living Door. She says the Parade of Homes is the best way to showcase her work.

“It helps a whole lot if if you could see the whole house and the floor plan together and also see the finishes that the builders do on each home, because every home is different and has different finishes and different value and different ways to do it. And so I think it’s really important to see that live before you pick a builder,” Scott said.

There are 72 homes on the parade, including one feature home with $5 admission. All proceeds help support the Home Builder’s community and charitable projects.
