2 skiers dead, 1 rescued after avalanche crashes down popular Utah mountain peak

SALT LAKE CITY – Search efforts have ended for two skiers who disappeared after an avalanche was reported along Utah’s Lone Peak Summit Thursday morning, according to FOX 13 Salt Lake City.United Fire officers told FOX 13 that the avalanche happened in the area of Little Cottonwood Canyon, a popular spot for skiers and snow recreation, though the avalanche occurred in a remote location.FOX 13 reports three skiers were hit by the avalanche, but one skier was able to dig himself out and call 911. He has since been rescued, but the bodies of two others were reportedly found on Thursday.The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office has not identified the avalanche victims but said one was from out of state. FOX 13 reports there was a heavy late season snow in the area in recent days, which may have triggered the event.
