GREGORY COUNTY, S.D. (KELO) — A Gregory County man has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for shooting two of his family members.

On Tuesday, Dillon Yellow Hawk, 27, was convicted of two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Yellow Hawk plead guilty to the charges on February 5, 2024, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of South Dakota.

On April 24, 2023, Yellow Hawk was living at his grandmother’s home in rural Gregory County on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. Yellow Hawk’s three young children, aunt and adult cousin also lived there. Several of them were consuming alcohol that evening, when a fight escalated between Yellow Hawk and his cousin. Yellow Hawk fired his shotgun, shooting his cousin in the abdomen.

Yellow Hawk then entered his grandmother’s bedroom with his gun. His aunt, who was also in the grandmother’s bedroom, attempted to grab the gun to prevent another shot. His aunt’s arm was near the muzzle when Yellow Hawk fired another shot and she was injured.

Both victims were transported to Sioux Falls for their injuries and required surgery.
